How to Sell Your Banners Through Clicks

Posted Posted in Banner Design

You’ve seen them all over the net. Be it in social network sites or public video sharing sites, banners are always there to advertise other people’s product. But, do they sell? In this article, I’m going to share with you the art behind banners that sells!

Banner fact #1: When designing banners, you should sell the clicks, not the products! Imagine a banner full with information such as a low priced promotion complete with the benefits and numbers to look at. What do you think? It’s definitely BAD. So many text and information, but little curiosity. The whole story has been told, do you need to click for more? What you’re trying to do is create curiosity enough to make them click and learn more (and this is where your landing page do the job!).

Here’s a good example of curiosity: a banner which has a text saying “Have you heard of Pod Slurping? It’s the latest technique to steal your organisation’s sensitive data”. If you own a company and the banner does makes sense to you, would you click to know what it’s all about? Of course you would! Because it drives you to know more because of your curiosity, and it sells you on the click, not on the product.

Banner fact #2: No call to action on your banners. I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of ‘no call to action’ banners and sadly, it fails to drive you to click the banners! If you have zero clicks, that means your banner is as good as a banner that is used for branding. It’s okay to get branding conscious but it will not drive you traffic and get sales right? To get that sales, you need to create call to action on your banners.

Let’s take a look at this kind of banner: “CLICK HERE FOR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHS FROM $200?. What did you see? I can tell you it’s very specific, very definitive and it tells you exactly what to do. With strong appeal in your banners, people will click to know more. Other strong “call to actions” includes free reports, trials or using deadlines.

Even the simple “Click here” text works as well. It doesn’t have to be long/lengthy, it just needs to be there!

According to research, people tends to click on links and buttons, so why not using these to get advantages to your banners? Even an underlined “Click Here” increases the click rate in banners (in recent case studies), so it really pays out.

Does that makes sense? Great! Have a nice try designing your banners!
